From January to October 2008, China's engine import and export were less affected by external factors and remained basically stable. Although the number of imports and exports decreased year-on-year, the engine import and export amount increased to some extent.

■ Import: 1L~3L gasoline engine is still the main target

According to statistics from the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers, from January to October 2008, China imported a total of 464,000 auto engines of all types, a year-on-year decrease of 4.5%.

Among the engines imported from January to October of last year, the proportion of gasoline engines was larger, accounting for more than 90% of the total, and about 419,000 units, a year-on-year decrease of 2.2%.

Vehicles with displacements of 1L to 3L are mainstream products in the domestic passenger car market. Therefore, the number of imported gasoline engines with a displacement in this range is also relatively large, about 390,000 units, accounting for 93.8% of imported gasoline engines.

Compared with gasoline engines, China's diesel engine production is relatively high, and the number of diesel engines imported is much lower than that of gasoline engines. From January to October of 2008, China imported a total of 45,000 diesel engines. Among them, 13,200 diesel engines with a power of 132.3 kW or more decreased by 4.12% year-on-year, and 31,800 diesel engines with a power of 132.3 kW or less, a year-on-year decrease of 24.02%.

Although the cumulative amount of China's engine imports fell from January to October 2008, the import amount increased by 16.6% year-on-year to 1.278 billion US dollars. Among them, the import amount of gasoline engines was 1.078 billion U.S. dollars, and the import amount of diesel engines was about 300 million U.S. dollars. The difference between the import amount of diesel engines and gasoline engines is far less than the difference in imports. It can be seen that the unit price of imported diesel engines is much higher than that of gasoline engines. From January to October of last year, the average unit price of imported gasoline engines was about US$3533, and the average unit price of imported diesel engines was about US$6,667, of which the average imported unit price of diesel engines with power greater than 132.3 kW reached US$16,700.

In the second half of 2008, the sluggish domestic auto market had a certain impact on engine imports. From May to November, engine imports continued to fall.

â–  Export: High-power diesel engine into a bright spot

From January to October of 2008, the export volume of China's automobile engines was far lower than that of imports, which was about 380,000 units, a year-on-year decrease of 8.83%.

From January to October last year, China’s exports of gasoline engines accounted for a large proportion of approximately 360,000 units. Among them, the export volume of products from 1L to 3L is relatively large, with about 250,000 units accounting for 69.4% of the export of gasoline engines. From January to October of last year, China exported a total of 18,900 diesel engines, and products with a power level of 180 horsepower or less accounted for about 50% each. Among them, the export of high-power diesel engines was 9,585, an increase of 305.11% year-on-year, becoming a bright spot for China's engine exports last year.

Although the cumulative amount of China's engine exports fell from January to October 2008, the export value increased by 8% year-on-year to US$635 million. Among them, the diesel engine with a power output of over 132.3 kilowatts was 73.02 million U.S. dollars, an increase of 452.18% over the same period last year.
