• Pod-type propeller (product library supply) design, saving fuel by up to 10% compared to conventional full-turn propellers, while reducing emissions
Designed for navigation mode and dynamic positioning with higher efficiency
Compact design, improved overall performance of the hull, increased payload, Paris, France, May 7th: GE (ship hangar location) Power Conversion business unit launched Inoveli, further enriching its offshore engineering (ship type shipyard trading system) solution. Inoveli is a pod-type propeller with unparalleled fuel efficiency and overall performance, and the introduction of Inoveli may change the maritime industry's perception of propulsion technology.
Inovelis integrates an electric propeller with an electric motor (purchased from the product library) located in a steerable pod below the hull of the offshore supply vessel. Inovelis has all the advantages of a pod propeller, including mobility, fast response and fuel economy. Based on the principle of pump injection, Inovelis has fixed stator blades and nozzles that work together to direct water flow through the impeller blades, greatly enhancing propulsion efficiency. The compact construction provides a higher degree of integration between the hull and the propulsion unit (purchasing supply), further improving the fuel economy and emissions of the vessel.
The pumping technology was originally used in submarines and is now used in high speed surface vessels. Currently, GE is applying this technology to the supply vessel (PSV) of the offshore engineering platform. Inovelis has greater thrust and improved hydrodynamic construction than conventional propulsion systems (products are available for purchase). In terms of dynamic positioning (DP) and navigation, it provides greater efficiency over a larger operating range. The conventional PSV propulsion unit consists of a large propeller with a nozzle (purchased from the product library), which reduces propulsion performance as the ship's speed increases.
The ship propeller using the conventional propulsion system pushes the water backwards, while the pump propeller pushes the water, and then the water is forcibly ejected through the nozzle. It is equivalent to a marine jet engine (purchased from the product library), but the jet engine is fixed, while Inovelis can point in any direction on a horizontal plane. Paul English, head of GE Power Conversion's shipbuilding industry, said: "Inovelis uses a new concept to provide better performance - not only improves thrust, but also improves fluid dynamics, maximizing the performance of the pod technology and improving it. Fuel efficiency."
The PSV is powered by two 2.5 megawatt (MW) Inovelis pods, saving 30% of the time at full speed. Paul English said: "According to our estimates, the annual fuel savings can be as high as $250,000."
Paul English added: “There are two trends now. One trend is that offshore supply vessels are larger and more powerful. Another trend is that oil and gas exploration makes ships farther away from the port of registry. The ideal system for ship operators must support cost-economics. Fuel efficient, fast sailing, and the ability to operate efficiently in the field using the DP mode. This becomes a dilemma because many of today's designs are a compromise between two different requirements."
The Inovelis system is different. Inovelis' system design is designed to best meet the performance and fuel efficiency requirements of the navigation and dynamic positioning modes.
Paul English said that Inovelis has the significant advantage of enabling ship designers to reduce the capacity of their power units – reducing the number of cylinders or engine volume – when designing a marine engineering ship (ship-type shipyard).
Inovelis uses GE's innovative induction motor technology to improve reliability and reduce maintenance requirements. In fact, the pod uses a “no-entry†design that helps reduce overall size, which is another significant difference from other designs.
Inovelis demonstrates GE's expertise in electrical propulsion and power technology. Paul English said: "The combination of engine, electric power unit, Inovelis thruster and DP control system (product library supply) as a system for correct design and optimization will have a huge advantage in terms of initial cost and life cycle cost. Excellent components make up an excellent system that gives the ship the advantage throughout its life cycle."
GE has received a large number of orders to order large PSVs. The first delivery is scheduled for the second quarter of this year, and ship trials will be carried out around the end of the year.
GE Power Conversion's offshore supply vessel solutions include power generation, electric propulsion, drilling systems, power positioning (DP) and marine automation (product library supply) systems.
