Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Co., Ltd. (MHI) has developed Japan's first system to supply high-pressure gas to help marine engines use natural gas fuel. The first set of equipment delivered to Mitsui Shipbuilding is expected to be delivered in early 2013 and will be installed in Mitsui Shipbuilding's marine diesel engines.
With this new system, the engine will be able to use LNG as a fuel to reduce CO2 emissions. In the future, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries will vigorously promote the market and attract high value-added ships to equip the system.
Mitsubishi Heavy Industries' new high-pressure gas supply system provides 30 megapascals (MPa) of LNG gas through a hydraulic pump, which is characterized by compact structure and low energy consumption. The hydraulic pump uses a hydraulic drive that eliminates the need for a deceleration machine for variable speed and flexible layout.
Mitsubishi Heavy Industries has commercialized the system by leveraging its extensive experience in the field of cryogenics and marine engines for LNG carriers. The integration of the system with a two-stroke, low-speed marine engine will be an efficient propulsion system to reduce pollution emissions.
