The flotation time refers to the time difference of the slurry staying in the flotation tank, that is, the time during which the slurry flows in the flotation tank. Under certain operating conditions, the recovery of useful components obtained by flotation in a unit of time is referred to as the flotation rate. Increasing the flotation speed is to improve the recovery rate and shorten the flotation time, which is an important issue in the operation of flotation technology.
When the other conditions are the same, the flotation results will depend on the flotation time. As the flotation time increases, the recovery rate increases and the concentrate quality decreases (below). As can be seen from the figure, the flotation speed is very fast in the initial stage of flotation, and then gradually decreases. For each type of ore, there is a suitable flotation time, because the recovery rate is low because the time is too short, but if the time is too long, not only the quality of the concentrate is lowered, but also it is not economical.

Generally speaking, the flotation particle dispersing concentrate quality requires a longer time than the fine grain shape, and the flotation in the mechanical agitation flotation machine is faster than the airlift flotation machine.
The length of the selection time is determined by the floatability of the mineral and the quality of the concentrate. In a simple case, the time required for the easy-floating mineral is about 15 to 100% of the roughing time. In complex situations, such as the time required for selection of multi-metal sulfide ore flotation rougher time may be equal to, or its 3 to 5 times. In the case of flotation, which is very poor in floatability and high in quality of concentrate, the selection time may be 5 to 9 times longer than the roughing time.
When polymetallic ore is subjected to preferential flotation, it is of particular importance to correctly determine the flotation time. The flotation time is too long, the selectivity of the process is destroyed, and finally the flotation index is affected.
The optimum flotation time for each ore is determined by a beneficiation test. Increasing the flotation time in production will increase the number of flotation machines and increase the consumption of electricity. Therefore, the correct selection of flotation time is of great significance to the economic indicators of flotation technology.
