Business News Agency September 27th The Dutch ING Bank recently stated that due to the impact of two new factors: new production capacity being gradually put into operation and the current economic downturn, the global ethylene capacity utilization rate will face greater downward pressure in 2010.
According to ING's research report, by the end of this year, more than 9 million tons/year of ethylene capacity will be added globally, and in 2010, an additional 8.5 million tons/year of ethylene capacity will be added. ING said that a large number of new production capacity from emerging economies such as China and India, as well as the Middle East, are gradually being put on the market.
Tamas Pletser, the author of the research report, said that by the end of 2010, the global ethylene production capacity will exceed 135 million tons/year and the global ethylene capacity utilization rate may fall below 80% this year.
Preston pointed out: “The market demand for petrochemical products is more sensitive to the economy than oil refining products. According to experience, the change in demand for ethylene and polymer markets is twice the growth rate of GDP, so the global ethylene capacity utilization rate will decline this year. Exceeding the refining plant capacity utilization rate, the global ethylene capacity utilization rate will face greater downward pressure in 2010 due to the drop in market demand and new production capacity.
