Recently, more and more mining companies in Russia have chosen Allison automatic transmissions. Many customers, such as the National Construction Company's TechStroyGaz, a subsidiary of Novy Urengoy, are increasingly favoring automatic transmissions. The root cause is the superior performance of Allison fully automatic transmissions with trouble-free operation and the lower total cost of ownership compared to manual transmissions. Since 2004, TechStroyGaz has used two 24 ton Scania R114С (6х6) dump trucks, one with a manual gearbox and the other with an Allison 4000 series fully automatic six-speed gearbox. . The two vehicles operate in the feeder center of the Yamal-Nenets Autonomous Region and its surrounding roads, which are pervaded in permafrost, rivers, lakes, marshes and clay roads and are known for their harsh environment. The winter there is long and cold, and the temperature is as low as minus 55°C. According to Valery Arestov, Chief Engineer of TechStroyGaz, not long ago, the dump truck equipped with a manual gearbox malfunctioned, but the one equipped with the Allison gearbox was safe and had accumulated a total of about 430,000 kilometers. Neither the vehicle nor the gearbox has disappointed the company due to the need for temporary repairs. Therefore, the company decided to purchase heavy-duty dump trucks equipped with Allison fully automatic transmissions in the future. Valery Arestov said that the vehicles to be purchased must work in oil fields and nearby roads and must meet high standards of durability. “First of all, for winters lasting up to eight months here, vehicles need to be operated 24 hours a day, and the engine is always running, because in the Yamal-Nenets region, the winter temperature is usually maintained below -45°C. It is difficult to start the engine of the vehicle. In addition, according to the five-category classification method of driving difficulty, the road conditions here are rated as Class IV. Therefore, we require that the dump truck can operate well in the field and reliability is very important.†Technology that meets demanding requirements Allison automatic gearboxes can operate at temperatures as low as minus 45°C to minus 47°C, while manual gearboxes do not operate at temperatures below minus 40°С. Because cold air increases the viscosity of the oil, it is impossible for manual gearboxes to hang on the starter. A common problem with dump trucks equipped with manual transmissions on sand or clay roads is clutch and drive shaft damage, as is the case with TechStroyGaz vehicles. Therefore, these manual vehicles require frequent maintenance and repair, which affects the schedule. The Scania dump trucks equipped with Allison automatic gearboxes do not have such faults. The gearboxes can be adapted to the driving style, vehicle load and road conditions to prevent overloading of the transmission system. “The maintenance of the Allison transmission is very simple. There is no need to repair the project because it is necessary to drive it to a maintenance station 350 to 400 km away from the site or at the Allison Technical Support Center in Tyumen City.†Valery Aristov added Road, "Some maintenance work, such as the regular replacement of oil and filter elements, can be carried out on site. In the future when we buy the next batch of dump trucks, we must choose the configuration of Allison automatic gearbox." Heavy-duty vehicles equipped with Allison transmissions have higher reliability and lower maintenance costs, perform better than similar vehicles, and are more powerful than manual transmissions.
